Los Alcázares

Safe, sandy beaches with great bars and restaurants

The nearest town of Los Alcázares is 2km away with a range of shops, bars & restaurants.
Pronounced “los – alcatha – res”, it is an old fishing and saltwater spa town on the Costa Calida (warm coast) in the Murcia region of Spain.

The town is on the western shore of the Mar Menor, the largest saltwater lagoon in Europe, separated from the Mediterranean Sea by a 22 kilometre long strip of land called La Manga.

Although Los Alcázares retains its Spanish feel there is no problem with language as at least basic English is spoken in most shops, bars and restaurants.

The promenade stretches for 8km, the local blue-flag beaches are fantastic having won the Q awards for excellence & safety.

It is a flat area idea for riding bikes around the waters edge on its beautifully paved promenade.

Los Alcázares is popular with the Spanish and is ideal for both relaxing and active family holidays alike. Couples will enjoy the many excellent restaurants in the town or just lazing around on the beach.

Los Alcázares has a “buzz” about it in the summer months – but it isn’t “Benidorm”. However, there are several bars where you can listen to music or dance the night away!

Have a look at the Los Alcázares Local Services Guide
It includes lots of information including Doctors, Emergency Pharmacies, Bus Services, Places to eat etc.

In the apartment you’ll find a Visitors Guide with recommendations of many places to eat from previous guests in the apartment.

History of Los Alcázares:
Los Alcázares is an old fishing and saltwater spa town. The name Alcázares comes from the Arabic work Al Kazar which means castle or palace.

No wonder the Moors chose Los Alcazares as a place to rest and relax in the temperate climate. The Romans were here before them and built the spas, which the Moors reopened when they arrived in order to take advantage of the therapeutic properties of the waters.

Over time it became a custom to take the “Novenarios” or nine baths here, and at the beginning of the 20th Century, when the people of Murcia began to use the Mar Menor as a resort area the practice started to assume more importance. The Hotel Balneario was built in 1904 and houses the updated and embellished spa.

There is a visitors guide in our apartment with suggestions of what to do and where to go.

The street art in Los Alcázares is amazing. Just take a walk and you’ll find it everywhere.
Much of it sponsored by the local council.
